During their second year, ESRs spent one-two months in the laboratories of the Associated Partners (APs) in order to acquire additional skills and interact with senior scientists with specialist expertise. The secondments allowed ESRs to extend their research, explore how skills and techniques might be applied to particular industrial concerns, and gain practical industry experience.

In-Oxford training

The ESR training programme was fully integrated within the University of Oxford's doctoral training programmes providing access to an extensive range of existing and newly constituted academic courses. These included lectures, seminars and short courses in the following areas:
  • Induction and basic training
  • Advanced analytical methods
  • Medicinal chemistry


In collaboration with APs and guest academics, ESRs have participated in 1-2 day specialist 'techniques' workshops:
